Probation for ex-Louisiana deputy guilty of tax evasion

April 4, 2018
Categories:

(AP) _ The former chief deputy of the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's office has been sentenced to five years of probation following his January conviction in a federal tax case.

Taffaro was sentenced today.

Prosecutors had sought a prison sentence of 27 to 33 months, saying incarceration serves as a deterrent to would-be tax evaders. Taffaro's attorney argued for leniency. He noted the 70-year-old Taffaro's lack of prior offenses, his charitable work and a distinguished law enforcement career.

Taffaro was convicted on 12 counts, including tax evasion and filing false returns. Prosecutors say he provided false information about his income and expenses from a business he co-owned with former Sheriff Newell Normand, who was not accused of wrongdoing.

Gun in backpack causes East Jeff lockdown

May 18, 2018
Categories:

Some scary moments this afternoon at East Jefferson High School in Metairie, when a report of an armed student caused the school to go in to lockdown.

The school sent this automated message this afternoon:

Around dismissal time, the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office says they received the report of a student on campus with a gun. Deputies say when they located the student, the student tried to run, prompting the lockdown.

Deputies located the student a short time later and authorities say a small-caliber handgun was recovered from the student's back pack. They arrested 17-year-old Liroy Friloux on charges of possession of a firearm on school grounds, possession of a stolen firearm, and resisting arrest.

The sheriff's office says no shots were fired, and everyone is safe.

JP Sheriff: Husband fatally wounds man who killed wife, other victim

May 19, 2018

A "minor property dispute" ended with two women shot to death, and their killer dying at the hands of the husband of one of the dead women, Jefferson Parish Sheriff's officials say today.

The sheriff's office says shortly after 9:00 p.m. Friday, 44-year-old Christopher Pike and his girlfriend, 43-year-old Melissa Baous arrived at the home of Tonia Billiot Dardar, 44, in the 7800 block of Barataria Boulevard. Sheriff's officials say there was an attempt to "resolve a minor property dispute." Investigators say that dispute got out of hand and ended with Pike shooting both Dardar and his girlfriend, Baous, killing them.

"In the aftermath, Tonia Dardar's husband returned to the residence, encountered Pike and exchanged gunfire," said Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office spokesman Glen Boyd. "During this exchange, Pike sustained wounds which proved fatal on scene."

The sheriff's office says Joseph Dardar cooperated with investigators, and his account of events is consistent with the evidence collected at the crime scene. Investigators released Dardar, pending further investigation in the ongoing case.

Accused killer of Metairie tow truck operator to stay in jail

78-year-old suspect unable to satisfy $500,000 bond

June 20, 2018

The man accused of fatally shooting Metairie tow truck operate "Big Lee" Martin will spend a little more time in jail. Wayne Higgins's attempt to post bond last month was rejected, according to The New Orleans Advocate.

The Advocate reports that the property Higgins's family put up to back the bond was deemed insufficient. The report said although it appraised at $600,000, bond would depend on the property's assessed value of $240,000.

Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office deputies arrested Higgins shortly after the May 5 shooting. Higgins and Martin were neighbors and had reportedly feuded for a long time. Things came to a head when Martin sprayed his hose on Higgins as Higgins backed out of his driveway. Witnesses said Higgins then got out of his vehicle and fatally shot Martin.

Higgins has another bond hearing in two weeks.

Sheriff: 5 arrested, 2 deputies with minor injuries after chase, gunfire in Metairie

"Lock the car doors, you prevent a bunch," says Lopinto

July 18, 2018

Jefferson Parish Sheriff Joe Lopinto says deputies arrested five teenagers Tuesday night after a car chase with gunfire in Metairie.

Lopinto says they got a call of a group of car burglars pulling on vehicle door handles around Edenborn Ave. and Shellie St. When they arrived, the sheriff says his deputies attempted to question the suspects, but they fled in a Mazda Mz6 reported stolen from New Orleans.

"They were entering the vehicle, went to make a traffic stop of that particular vehicle, and one of the subjects jumped out with a gun," said Lopinto. "Our officer opened fire on him, but also had to dive out of the way of the approaching Mazda."

The chase went from West Esplanade and Severn to Veterans Blvd., with bullets flying. It sped through Kenner and ended at the canal flood wall at the Kenner/St. Charles Parish line.

"They obviously didn't know where they were going, and didn't try to get on the interstate or do anything different and went straight down to the dead-end," the sheriff said.

"One of the subjects jumped out with another gun," said Lopinto. "I had three officers fire at that location."

During the chase, they say the teens rammed deputies' cars and injured two of the JPSO officers.  They were both treated and released from the hospital.

None of the bullets hit any of the suspects nor the deputies.

The arrested suspects range in age from 13 to 19.

Can Jefferson Parish sustain historic low crime rates?

First half of 2018 continues 2017's record-low trend

July 20, 2018

Crime in Jefferson Parish is at historic low levels, even after reaching historic lows last year.

In all major crime categories, the first half of this year is trending lower than last year's record lows. At what point will the math catch up with them? Sheriff Joe Lopinto says that's harder to predict than when criminals will strike, so they make sure they have the tools to solve crimes and arrest the perpetrators.

"We've done a good job in Jefferson Parish of investing in crime-fighting techniques," said Lopinto.

"We're the only local agency in the entire state of Louisiana that has their own accredited crime lab. What that means is, when we lift a fingerprint from a vehicle, we're able to run that within days...instead of sending it off to a state police crime lab and get that same fingerprint identification back six weeks later."

The department also has hundreds of automatic license plate reading cameras positioned throughout the parish, which can alert the department to the location of vehicles reported stolen or otherwise on police radar. The sheriff says they also routinely evaluate how to best assign their personnel to maximize their abilities to fight crime.

"I'm going to make sure that our agency is on top of our game, to give us every possibility...that helps us with our crime rates," the sheriff said.

The Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office has booked 32-year-old Ray Farria on a charge of second degree murder in the shooting death of his wife, Dominique Farria. He also faces charges of being a felon in possession of a firearm and obstruction of justice.

Authorities say Mrs. Farria was driving on Manhattan Blvd. with her husband riding on the hood of her car Tuesday afternoon, when the fatal shooting occurred. Sheriff Joseph Lopinto said at the time that it appeared to be a domestic situation.

The sheriff's office says it is not confirming reports that family members said the couple's four children were in the vehicle at the time of the shooting.

Suspect in "Big Lee" killing bonds out

August 1, 2018

Wayne Higgins, charged in the shooting death of Metairie tow truck business owner "Big Lee" Martin has posted bond, The New Orleans Advocate reports.

Higgins's lawyers had been trying to convince a judge to lower the $500,000 bond, arguing that the defendant couldn't afford it. The Advocate cites court records showing that Higgins managed to come up with the money and post bond, anyway. Higgins faces a charge of second-degree murder.
